The finish is a 2 part system. The preparation is done by dampening the wood and then scraping the “fuzz” smooth. This is repeated several times until the surface remains smooth after wetting, then an egg tempera is prepared from purified egg white and 2 coats applied as a ground. A varnish is prepared from Venitian Turpentine and refined linseed oil as per the William M. Fulton
method which is derived from an old formula mentioned in the Ed Herron-Allen book, “Violin-Making As It Is and Was”. This varnish is far superior to all of the many others that I’ve tried. It is hand rubbed between each of the 8 to 10 coats and finally polished with pumice.
